Challenge:

To find a way to provide online continuing education across several related but different design professions including Architects, Engineers, Landscape Architects, Surveyors and Interior Designers.

Solution:

All too often different groups believe that they must create and maintain their own version of a product or delivery system. They fail to see the commonalities between their needs and the needs of other groups and therefore miss opportunities to collaborate and partner to find solutions that not only meet their needs but also open doors to even greater potential returns.

In this case, when one disciple sought to create an online portal to deliver streaming multi-media continuing education, they soon discovered that they faced a number of problems. The up front costs to develop the site, the cost of the delivery system and the cost to create multi-media courses were significant. The limited size of the audience within the one profession limited the potential return on the investment.

The solution developed by The Caviart Group President, Clarence "Buck" Chaffee, was to forge partnerships between a number of similar but separate organizations and private companies to create a single portal through which all of the groups could share in delivering content to their profession and to the related professions.

Results:

The Center for Collaboration and Education in Design was formed and www.c2ed.com launched to serve all of the design disciplines through one mechanism. Courses are created and owned by different groups and individuals and distributed over the Internet to any design professional to which the subject matter applies.

The overhead is shared by all and the costs per course are greatly reduced. In addition the potential market for any course is several times the size of any one profession making the venture much more successful than could have been accomplished by separate portals.
